Whitening is a general term for lifting stains and lightening the shade of teeth. Discoloration of teeth can occur from improper care, aging, smoking, and the consumption of dark beverages such as coffee, tea, soda and wine. The outer layer of teeth (called the enamel) holds stains in its pores and in a thin coating (called the pellicle) that is on the outside of teeth. Bleaching procedures change your innate tooth color through the removal of both deep and surface stains.
At Smiles Unlimited Dentistry, P.C., we offer two whitening services. The first is in-office whitening (also known as chairside bleaching) which is the fastest form of whitening available. During this procedure a strong bleaching gel is applied to the teeth and the results are visible before you leave our office. And to help you maintain that radiant new smile, we provide bleaching trays which can be used for at-home touch-ups.
The second whitening service features bleaching trays for at-home whitening sessions. Made on the premises by Dr. Richman and staff, these trays are worn nightly for thirty minutes over a two-week period. Although not as dramatic or immediate, great results can still be obtained using this method.
Non-bleaching procedures, such as whitening toothpastes which contain abrasives to remove stains and polish teeth, can also be used to achieve a brighter smile.
